In Memoriam Olaf Schmidt
We regret to inform you that our Fellow, Prof. Dr. Olaf Schmidt, emeritus professor at University of Hamburg, has passed away on September 11, 2024.
Olaf Schmidt graduated his doctorate at the University of Münster 50 years ago and then joined the University of Hamburg, where he became part of the Chair of Wood Biology and Wood Protection under Prof. Dr. Walter Liese. For five decades, he was very actively engaged in research and education focusing on fungi, bacteria, and their effects on trees and wood. Throughout his career, he remained active, supervising doctoral students, hosting guest researchers and scholarship holders, and regularly providing expert reviews for both German and international scientific journals.
